Our peel is made of Trichloroacetic Acid, called TCA or the Chemical peel. It is particularly suitable for those who would like to get rid of lines, wrinkles, age spots, acne scaring or blemishes. It can be used for acne, stretch mark or tattoo removal. Compared to other peels it can give a more reliable and longer lasting result.

On the down side, it can be quite uncomfortable for a few minutes while the TCA peel is being applied, if using a higher strength peel. Once the acid is applied to the skin, it is difficult to reverse it. Trichloroacetic acid is an aqueous solution and for that reason cannot be neutralized only diluted, it naturalizes itself after about twenty minutes. So if you read on the net that you can naturalize the burning-sensation with soda for a TCA peel that is incorrect, this is only valid for a Glycolic acid one of the alpha-hydroxy acids. They are naturally occurring organic acids derived from various fruits.
The TCA peel is chemical, and is generally left on the skin for 3-4 minutes, then washed off - or rather the water splashed on the skin takes the heat out, then a covered ice pack or iced water can use used, and the heat leaves the skin very quickly. The few minutes discomfort is well worth the end fantastic result.

Note: 15%-25% is a mild peel. 50% is a medium peel. 80%-100% is a deep peel.

The results you get the healing duration and the burning sensations (if any) on application all depends on which strength peel you buy.

A mild peel only tingles on application, or may be a little irritating, whereas a medium - deep peel burns for a few minutes on application. Obviously the higher strength the peel the more dramatic the result, but you must use a peel strength corresponding to your skin type - see Q & A page.

Potential Side Effects

With all peels the potential risks are the same - namely scarring, loss of pigmentation, or temporary increase of pigmentation. Thankfully, with the medium depth peels scarring and loss of pigmentation are very rarely seen. However, temporary increase in pigmentation can be seen.

Peels do not thin the skin. On the contrary, repeated peels (6-12 months) will generate more collagen ensuring that the skin will remain rejuvenated and in optimal condition. Skin peels are a very useful, safe and inexpensive procedure in cosmetic medicine.

Note: Mild peels (15%-25%) can be used once a month to achieve the desirable 'fresh look' result.

Never, never exfoliate, instead use a skin mask or remove hair from the area to be treated for at least one week prior to your treatment. If you do this it opens the pores, can often break the skin, and irritates the skin, especially if you use a loafer. The TCA will then penetrate too quickly and deeply, leading to a VERY painful application. You also run the risk of leaving burn looking marks on the skin.

We cannot guarantee results; some times clients have wild expectations. A face-peel does not replace a face-lift for example. It will re-texturize your face. Removing lines, wrinkles etc, leaving your face looking radiant, rejuvenated and years younger. But it is not cosmetic surgery. It will not reduce the appearance of blood vessels on the skin, or remove deeply ingrained wrinkles.

The higher the strength of the peel you choose, the more dramatic the result. But very important - always check your skin type on the Q & A page first and make an informed decision before you order.

After treatment with the TCA peel:
Day 1: The skin will look like it has a sunburn. Medium and deep peels only.
Day 2: Skin will look like it has a tan, or be red, and will feel tight. Medium and deep peels only.
Day 3: For the next several days the skin will get tighter, patch, may swell, scab or blister, and will start to peel....and reveal a much younger and more radiant look.

Note: This reaction is for a higher strength peel e.g. 80%. A mild, medium peel does not have this down time or reaction.

With a TCA peel, your healed skin will be able to produce pigment as always; the peel will not bleach the skin. However, TCA-peel patients are strongly advised to avoid sun exposure and wear sun screen for several months after treatment, to protect the newly formed layers of skin.

Even though TCA is milder than phenol, it may also produce some unintended colour changes in the skin. With the phenol peel, (we don't use this, it is not TCA) the new skin frequently loses its ability to make pigment (that is, tan). This means that not only will the skin be lighter in colour, and look waxy, but you'll always have to protect it from the sun. Phenol may pose a special risk for patients with a history of heart disease, and it is a known mutagen (that is an agent that changes the genetic information of an organism and increases the number of mutations).

Important Read This:
TCA (our peel) is medical/pharmaceutical grade - the highest purity possible, not cheap technical grade. So take care to buy from a reputable retailer or skin clinic. Technical grade (reagent grade, or other non-pharmaceutical grade, CP grade or NF grade) usually contains 2-10% or more dichloroacetic acid which is a known carcinogen and known to cause cancer. Technical grade also contains iron and sulphuric acid which can stain, discolour, or age skin. These are sold by untrained persons and you don't really know what you are getting, or how hazardous it may be to your skin, and/or general health.
